In lettura: How to insert ads in AI-generated WordPress posts via Extra AI instructions

AI Content Generator doesn’t ship with a dedicated ad-insertion feature. That doesn’t mean you can’t have ad-supported AI-generated content — it means you use the same mechanism that handles every other body-level customisation: the Extra AI instructions metabox. Tell the AI exactly where you want ad placeholders to appear, what format they should take, and the model places them at the right spot in every article it writes.

This tutorial covers the full workflow: where Extra AI instructions live, how to write placement rules the model understands and respects, the three main ad placement strategies (after first H2, between H2 pairs, end-of-article), how to pair the instructions with your real ad-serving plugin (Ad Inserter, Advanced Ads, AdRotate), and the verification steps that confirm the placement renders correctly on the public site.

By the end you’ll have campaigns that produce articles with ad placement markers in the right spots automatically, ready to be picked up by your ad-serving plugin for monetisation — without any manual editing on every post.

Why Extra AI instructions for ads

Ad-serving plugins like Ad Inserter work by looking for shortcodes or HTML markers in the post body. They handle the actual ad rendering (matching against AdSense, direct deals, sponsorships); they don’t generate placement themselves. On hand-written content, editors add the shortcodes manually as they write. On AI-generated content, somebody needs to tell the AI where to put the markers — which is exactly what Extra AI instructions does.

The advantage over a rule-based plugin that injects ads after-the-fact (e.g. “insert an ad every 500 words”) is contextual placement: the AI knows where the natural section breaks are, where the reader pauses, where an ad fits without breaking the reading flow. The result is higher CTR and lower bounce rate compared to mechanical ad injection.

Where the field lives

The Extra AI instructions metabox in the campaign editor. Anything you write here is prepended to every generation as high-priority instructions — including ad placement markers.

Inside any campaign, scroll to the Extra AI instructions (campaign) metabox. The textarea labelled “Extra instructions (high priority)” is where the ad placement rules go. Everything written here is honoured strictly by the AI across every article in the campaign.

Strategy 1 — Shortcode after the first H2

The most common placement. The first H2 sits “above the fold” for most readers; the ad goes right after the closing of that section. Add to Extra AI instructions:

After the body content of the FIRST H2 section ends (before the SECOND
H2 heading begins), insert exactly this shortcode on its own line:

[ad_inserter block="1"]

Do not insert this shortcode anywhere else in the article.

Adapt the shortcode to your ad-serving plugin (Ad Inserter uses [ad_inserter block="N"]; Advanced Ads uses [the_ad id="N"]; AdRotate uses [adrotate group="N"]). The AI inserts the line verbatim; the ad plugin renders the actual ad on every page load.

Strategy 2 — Between H2 pairs for long-form

For 1500+ word articles, one ad isn’t enough — you want spacing through the article. Modify the instruction to “after every other H2”, which produces 3–4 ad slots in a typical long-form piece:

After every other H2 section (after the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th H2),
insert this shortcode on its own line at the end of that section:

[ad_inserter block="2"]

Skip insertion in: introduction (before first H2), conclusion
(last H2 titled "You're done" or similar), troubleshooting list.

The “skip in conclusion/troubleshooting” carve-out matters: readers who reach the conclusion are converting; an ad there reads as desperate. The AI respects the exclusion list strictly when you spell it out.

Strategy 3 — End-of-article only

The cleanest from a UX perspective, the lowest from a CTR perspective. One ad at the end of the article only, before the related-posts widget. Use this for premium content where reading experience is the priority:

After the very last paragraph of the article (after the "You're done"
section), insert exactly this shortcode on its own line:

[ad_inserter block="3"]

Do not insert any other ad shortcodes in the article.

Step 1 — Pair with the ad-serving plugin

The shortcode the AI inserts only renders an actual ad if the ad-serving plugin is configured to handle it. Install Ad Inserter (free, the most flexible), Advanced Ads (powerful but heavier), or AdRotate (lightweight, for direct campaigns).

Configure the plugin’s block numbering to match what you wrote in Extra AI instructions. Block 1 = inline mid-article banner; Block 2 = sidebar/responsive variant; Block 3 = end-of-article sticky. Each block can map to a different ad code (AdSense, direct ad slot, affiliate banner).

Step 2 — Run a test campaign and inspect on the frontend

Generate one article from the campaign. Open it in the WordPress editor — you should see the shortcode line at the configured position. Click Preview; on the public frontend, the shortcode should render as an actual ad (or a placeholder if your AdSense isn’t yet approved).

If the shortcode appears but doesn’t render, the ad-serving plugin isn’t catching it — check the plugin’s block configuration and shortcode syntax. If the shortcode doesn’t appear at all, the AI didn’t follow the instruction — strengthen the Extra AI instructions wording (“MUST insert”, “exactly once”, “on its own paragraph”) and retry.

Compliance and reader experience considerations

  • AdSense limits — Google’s policy allows three ad units per page on most page types. Don’t configure more than that in the AI instructions.
  • Sponsorship disclosure — if some ads are direct sponsorships, add a sponsorship marker in the same article via Extra AI instructions (“After the second paragraph, insert: [sponsored_note id=’N’]”).
  • Reading flow — ads inside numbered lists or right after code blocks break the reading flow. Tell the AI to skip those positions.
  • Mobile vs desktop — the ad plugin handles the responsive sizing; the AI just places the shortcode. Don’t try to differentiate at the prompt level.

Per-cluster ad strategies

Different campaigns can have different ad strategies. A high-volume news campaign might use Strategy 2 (every other H2) for maximum impressions. A tutorial campaign might use Strategy 1 (one ad after first H2) to preserve the reading experience. A pillar-content campaign might use Strategy 3 (end-of-article only) to keep cornerstone pages clean.

Each campaign has its own Extra AI instructions, so the strategies don’t conflict. Test the CTR per strategy over the first month and converge to whichever combination works best for your audience.

Troubleshooting

  • Shortcode appears in the body but doesn’t render as an ad — ad plugin block configuration is wrong, or the AdSense unit is not approved yet.
  • Shortcode is rendered as literal text on the frontend — the ad plugin isn’t active. Activate it or switch plugins.
  • The AI inserted the shortcode in the wrong section — instructions weren’t specific enough. Add “AFTER the closing of the FIRST H2 section, BEFORE the SECOND H2 heading” instead of “after the first section”.
  • The AI inserted multiple shortcodes despite the instruction to use only one — reinforce: “Insert this shortcode exactly ONCE per article. Never twice.”
  • AdSense flagged the page for low value — too many ads relative to content. Switch to Strategy 1 or 3.

You’re done

That’s the full ad-insertion workflow without a dedicated plugin feature: pick a placement strategy (after first H2 / every other H2 / end-of-article), write the placement instructions into Extra AI instructions with the exact shortcode your ad-serving plugin expects, pair with Ad Inserter or equivalent, verify on the public frontend, refine per-campaign.

From here every article produced by the campaign ships with the ad markers in the right spots automatically. Monetisation happens without any manual editing, and the placements respect the natural reading flow of each article rather than being mechanically injected at fixed character offsets.
